Ever feel compromised with your varifocals? Do you experience blurry side vision or curved distortion when going down stairs or reading?  If you’ve been disappointed with varifocals before you’ll be excited about our new varifocal lens design!  Essilor, who invented the varifocal lens design over 50 years ago, have added an all-new progressive lens to their extensive range.

One of our patients has recently started to wear the new Varilux S lens for the first time … ‘They are crystal clear and have sharp focus at all distances … (and compared to her previous varifocal lenses)… they do give much clearer all round vision’.*

Two new and exclusive technologies have made the Varilux S Series design overcome the compromises you may have previously had when wearing your varifocals.

Nanoptix technology reduces the ‘swim effect’.  Synchroneyes technology ensures maximised fields of vision. If you have previously experienced some limits with your premium varifocal lenses, Essilor’s new Varilux S Series will provide you with ultimate flawless vision.

Wearers of the new Varilux S Series have experienced a wider angle of vision and a more balanced feel when moving.  90% of the swim effect is reduced through Varilux S Series compared to other premium lenses.**

Your new lens design comes with a choice of two anti-reflection coatings, Optifog UV and Crizal Forte UV.  We have had positive feedback from our patients for these premium coatings … ‘They certainly stay clearer for longer and are not a problem in the rain’.*

Both coatings have UV protection … your eyes can be damaged by UV rays 365 days of the year.  Even if your not in bright sunlight UV rays are everywhere and our Crizal UV coating will protect your eyes from the harmful light that reflects from the back of your lenses into your eye. For more information see our previous entriy on protecting your eyes from UV rays.

Also available for Varilux S Series lenses is  Crizal Optfog UV which provides you with fog free vision.

By treating your lenses once a week with the Optifog activator you will have steam free lenses in any situation!  For more information and to see our Optifog demonstration.

Its getting to that time of the year when we wrap up for crisp frosty mornings … enjoy cosy nights by the fire … but as a spectacle wearer do you find your glasses getting foggy when you’re out and about during your day in the winter?

Here at Lichfield Street Opticians we know it has always been a problem for all spectacles wearers that when you go from a cold environment to hot surroundings and visa versa your lenses foggy up and your vision is temporarily blurred until your lenses clear.  It can be a major inconvenience and until now there hasn’t been a product that has completely eliminated this problem.

Optifog coating was introduced last year and it has been has now been relaunched to include Crizal Forte UV.  It won ‘Product Of The Year’ at this years Opticians Awards.  The combination of Optifog and Crizal UV means that your eyes have 25 times better UV protection than without the coating plus a lens that won’t fog up when you move from hot to cold environments.

The top layer of the Optifog coating has fog repellent properties. To activate the Optifog on your lenses we supply you with a bottle of Optifog Activator.  You simply apply a drop of the solution to both sides of your lenses and wipe them over with a micro fibre cloth.  Your lenses are now completely fog resistant!

Unlike other anti-fog sprays you may have tried in the past, which have to been used daily with the Optifog Activator it only has to be used once a week.

Included in the Optifog UV coating is the usual benefits of an anti reflection coating

Many of us wear glasses for day-to-day vision. Many of us like to be outside when the sun is shining. But many of us don’t want to buy separate sunglasses. So what other options are available to you when you are out in the bright glare of the sun?

Coloured Tints for your Lenses

Essilor Tints

At Lichfield Street Opticians we can offer you coloured tints that can be added to your lenses when you next update your prescription glasses. With a choice of 4 colours – black, brown, grey or grey-green (these are the colours that will not distort your perception of colour in the world around you) – and with a range of tint strengths we can tailor to your needs. They also offer complete UV protection.

Tinted lenses are just right for people with light sensitive eyes especially as they will also help to deal with indoor artificial light. The colours will not alter one’s perception of colours of, for example, road signs, making them especially ideal for drivers – especially when enhanced with lens coating options such as anti-glare. We can offer tints with all of our lenses, including lenses from Essilor and Hoya.

Lens tints are ideal for all walks of life and allow wearers to see colours exactly as they should be seen, in safety.

Transitions and Photochromic Lenses

Transitions-Healthy-Sight-In-Every-Light

Transitions and photochromic lenses are clear lenses that will darken on exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation – i.e. when one steps outside into the sun with them. Once the UV is removed (for example by walking indoors), they return to their clear state, just like normal lenses. The brighter and hotter the sun, the darker they become – ensuring that you have the best protection from harsh light and glare. They are the perfect solution for those who have increased sensitivity to light but do not want a tint over their glasses at all times.

Sunclips

A flip-up sunclip fitted to spectacles

Sunclips – also known as clip-ons – are another ideal and cost effective way to add the shading effect of sunglasses to your regular spectacles. Put simply, these are UV-filtering tinted covers that can clip onto your existing frame, instantly transforming your day-to-day glasses into sunglasses.

Some of these – flip-up sunclips (see image above) have pegs which grip your frame above the bridge (the segment of frame between the lenses that sits on top of your nose). These are hinged and can be flipped up or down if you need to alternate between tinted or clear vision – ideal for long drives in changing conditions! What’s more, if we do not have the exact size of flip-up sunclip in stock, we can easily trim a larger one down to match your frame exactly.

"Fit-over" Sunclip

You can also get Fit-over sunclips. These are similar to Flip-Up clip-ons but have four small ‘feet’ that grip your frame at the sides of the frame below the arm sides. These offer a more secure fit, at the expense of not being able to flip them up when a tint is not needed.

Both of these types of sunclip are available right now at Lichfield Street Opticians – all with UV400 protection against harmful UVA and UVB rays and with polarised options that offer you extra protection against glare.

For more information, to try sunclips or to view a demonstration of Transitions photochromic lenses in action, please call us on 01902 420348 or pop in to see us!

Polarised lenses are a special type of light-filtering lens that do not have a regular tint like regular sunglasses. They are more effective at filtering glare from sunlight and reflected light, such as the sun reflecting off water, sand, snow or hot road surfaces.

Instead of a regular tint, polarised lenses have a layer that consists of hundreds of tiny vertical lines that are so small, to the naked eye they look like a solid colour. These miniature bars effectively block horizontal light waves, allowing only vertical waves to pass through. This is probably better explained with a more visual method:

polarization

As most glare is carried on horizontal light waves, vertically polarised lenses are extremely effective at removing the effects of glare, improving your ability to see clearly on even the sunniest of days, whether you are out driving, cycling, working or relaxing on the beach.

polarised-road-example

All polarised lenses also come with UV400 protection as a standard, ensuring that your eyes are protected from the harmful effects of exposure to UV – essential for your holiday sunbathing sessions!

You can choose a polarised tint for your regular sunglasses, or even have polarised prescription sunglasses if desired – just remember that, like all sunglasses, they aren’t ideal for wearing indoors!

At Lichfield Street Opticians, as well as offering polarised tints as an option for your prescription lenses, we also stock a range of Polaroid sunglasses. Polaroid – the company which invented polarised lenses, are recognised the world over as the definitive authority on polarised lenses and the technology behind these fashionable marvels.

So you’ve done all the hard work … you’ve chosen your new gorgeous spectacle frame and decided on the best lenses for your prescription.  They’ve been fitted and adjusted with care by your friendly opticians!  But like most products you can only keep them in the best condition if you take good care of them.

We’ve put together 10 top tips to maintain the best vision and fit from your glasses.

Children's Eyecare and Glasses

1) Always use both hands to put your glasses on and to take them off.

2) Keep your glasses in the hard case provided when not wearing them.  This will reduce the possibility of scratching your lenses and protect against breakage.

3) Never put your glasses lens down on any surface, or bring them into contact with sharp or abrasive objects.

4) Avoid intense heat.  Keep your glasses away from heat sources and don’t leave them in a car when its hot outside.  It can permanently warp your frame.

5) Be careful with hairsprays and perfume!  Substances such as glue, acetone and domestic cleaning products can damage your frame and lenses.

6) Before cleaning your glasses you can remove any hard dust particles from the lens surface by rinsing them with lukewarm water.

7) Dry your lenses with a clean soft cloth.  For day to day cleaning use a microfibre cloth, as provided with your case.

8 ) Don’t use paper towels or tissues to clean your lenses.  These often contain wood particles that can damage the surface of your lenses.

9) To keep your glasses clean when your out and about, it is handy to have a lens cleaning spray.  Our cleaning products are formulated to effectively clean all lens types without streaking.

10) At Lichfield Street Opticians we provide the best aftercare service for your spectacles … FREE lifetime fitting and adjustment service!  If at any time your glasses need adjusting, refitting or cleaning we will provide this service free of charge as part of our customer care to you.

When your optician talks about anti reflective lens coating, it might be something you haven’t tried before or even heard of. A lens coating eliminates a lot of the problems and discomfort that spectacle wearers find with an uncoated lens.
