Why Do We Need to Test our Eyes Regularly?
We all rely on our vision for every aspect of our daily lives. We are taking in a terrific amount of information through our eyes all the time, whether by reading, watching television, even walking down the road. Sometimes our very lives depend on having good eyesight; for example - every time you drive on the road, or when you are on foot trying to cross said road!
And yet most people do not have regular eye tests, and many of them have never been to see an optician.
The reason for this is in part due to the fact that in most cases your eyes will not tell you that something is wrong. Unlike teeth, which become painful quickly when a problem arises, eyesight most often tends to deteriorate in a very gradual manner over time - sometimes taking months or years. People genuinely do not notice that their eyesight is faltering.
But, just like oral health and hygiene, regular eye examinations help to detect problems early. This is important because if a condition is caught early, there is a greater chance of successful treatment, especially in the case of children and the elderly. If you are a regular driver, it is imperative that you take eye tests at least every two years, or as your optician recommends, and that your prescription is up-to-date, in order to legally drive - Please see the DVLA for more information.
